Pelicano Coffee Co, The English Roaster with a Korean Soul

Pelicano Coffee Co, The English Roaster with a Korean Soul

As a fortuitous encounter in Australia, a Korean heritage and a love for the local tattooing scene created Pelicano Coffee Co, a specialty coffee roaster nestled in the seaside resort town of Brighton

Brighton, a seaside resort town in the south of England that at first glance may seem trendy and glamour, has instead always been young and alternative, since that infamous (or glorious, depending on who tells it) weekend in 1964 when it was home to the famous “battle” between the two rival groups of Mod and Rockers.

So it’s no wonder that Brighton was one of the pioneers of the English specialty coffee culture outside of London, thanks to a bunch of coffee shops and roasteries, led by Pelicano Coffee Co, that nowadays has grown to four coffee shops, and that supplies many other cafés in the region.

But the story of Pelicano doesn’t start in Brighton, but far away, in a pear farm in the outskirts of Melbourne (Australia) where Zephir Thomas and Sol Lee met.

Their encounter is now a legend, and not much is known about what happened back there: for sure, both were in love with the local coffee scene (already thriving at the time), so much in love to decide to open their own specialty coffee roasters.

Back to Brighton, 2014: Pelicano Coffee Co. open its doors to the cool local community, and it doesn’t take long for them to become the pioneer of the pioneers: the hand-roasted coffee is amazing and the design of the company is simply outstanding.

Thanks to the art of in-house illustrator Sol (the same Sol who is also one of the founders), that has ties to both his Korean heritage and the local tattooing culture,

Pelicano is able to quickly create a distinctive style. Cool merch, of course, but above all coffee bags that changes with the monthly rotating offer of single origin, and which are always eagerly awaited by customers scattered all around the country.
